Chuck Taylor
In 1919, the Converse Rubber Shoe Company – one of the top athletic footwear companies in the United States – released a dark-colored variant of its Non-Skid basketball trainer. Known as the All Star, it was a popular shoe, but affable semi-pro Charles Hollis “Chuck” Taylor had some comfort issues, so he implored Converse to update its design. In response, the brand employed Chuck, and he soon became an integral part of their success, so much so that his signature was added to the All Star in 1934, beginning the epic story of the Converse Chuck Taylor.
The Chuck Taylor features a durable canvas upper with medial ventilation ports, a protective rubberized toe cap and an extensive lacing structure. Combined with the distinctive dual lines of stitching and the reinforced eyelets, this creates powerful lockdown, while the soft, malleable canvas offers a snug fit and superior comfort.
A vulcanized rubber sole with a textured toe bumper supports the Converse Chuck Taylor. Durable yet flexible, it works with the cushioned Ortholite sockliner to produce excellent comfort. Meanwhile, the rubber outsole delivers solid traction via a distinctive diamond tread pattern that was originally designed to facilitate omnidirectional on-court movement.
The modern Chuck Taylor is remarkably similar to the 1920s silhouette, its stylishly minimalist, timeless design featuring a colorful upper adorned with the iconic Chuck Taylor ankle disc. Elegant stitching creates eye-catching lines, and the heel displays a classic Converse All Star license plate to complete the compelling retro look.
The Converse Chuck Taylor has had a remarkable history. After dominating basketball leagues for 50 years, it went on to appear in blockbuster movies, became popular among rebellious music scenes and was adopted by global subcultures. It has also been involved in countless collaborations spanning art, fashion, music, movies and sport, going all the way back to a 1934 partnership with Disney. The Converse x Comme des Garçons Chuck Taylors have become ubiquitous fashion items, while other notable editions have come from menswear designer Feng Chen Wang, luxury British label JW Anderson, American apparel brand Carhartt, high-end fashion house Dior, alternative hip-hop rapper Tyler, The Creator, influential French designer Isabel Marant and popular singer-songwriter Charli XCX.
Today, the Chuck Taylor is a versatile sneaker with styles ranging from the nostalgic high-top and the classy low-top to the various platform editions and the Chuck 70, which is based on the trainer that ruled NBA courts throughout the 1970s. It is often worn by celebrities including 2025 NBA Champion and MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and pop star Billie Eilish, whose 2024 project allowed fans to create custom Chuck Taylors decorated with her song lyrics.
The Converse Chuck Taylor is an icon of global culture with an incredible backstory. For more than 100 years, it has delivered classic comfort and timeless style to sportspeople and casual wearers around the world, becoming a beloved fashion staple and one of the most renowned sneakers in history.
