471

New Balance was a big part of the 1970s running boom, with models such as the 320 improving the performance capabilities of athletic footwear. In the early 2020s, evolving trends saw the return of such heritage silhouettes alongside the creation of retro-inspired sneakers like the New Balance 471, whose  classy design pays homage to the brand’s sporting legacy.

The 471 features a breathable mesh upper with fuzzy suede overlays adding durability to the heel and forefoot. Leather accents bring textural variation to the heel tab, sidewall logos and collar, while the 70s-inspired exposed-foam tongue is an authentic throwback touch. The shoe’s last shape is based on the original 320 model, making it sleek and comfortable with a snug retro feel.

The New Balance 471 is built upon a soft wedge of EVA foam, which echoes the comfort-giving designs of the 1970s. Its rubber outsole has a similar retro effect, with wavy herringbone tread lines stretching from heel-to-toe for solid traction. In a further nod to old-school running shoes, the grippy rubber surface extends up over the toe and heel of the upper, offering comprehensive support and enhancing the vintage vibes.

Everything about the New Balance 471 reflects the 70s-era running shoes it is based upon, from the refined material choices to the visible tongue foam. Other heritage elements include the distinctive fang-shaped forefoot overlays, the exaggerated sidewall logos, which were pioneered in the 1970s, and the woven tongue patch, with its classic NB symbol. This compelling look is enhanced by the captivating contrast between the curved heel panel and the more angular overlays on the toe. Ultimately, the 471’s minimalist outer is elegantly light on branding, with a clean, versatile look that lets the vintage influences speak for themselves.

Ahead of the full release of the New Balance 471 in March 2025, the silhouette was revealed at two events that showcased its broad appeal through both sporting and fashion connections. On January 23rd, WNBA star Cameron Brink was pictured wearing the stylish ‘Timberwolf’ launch colorway, with its classy neutrals and light blue logos, while courtside during an NBA match at the Accor Arena in Paris. Around the same time, Japanese designer Junya Watanabe presented his collaborative two-pack of sophisticated 471s, the first in New Balance’s signature gray tones, the second a stealthy dark navy colorway with eye-catching cream-colored logos. A few months later, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas wore the ‘Gray Days’ colorway as part of the brand’s annual celebration of its famously understated color palettes, demonstrating the 471’s casual sporty style.

Infused with the brand’s running heritage and designed for modern comfort, the New Balance 471 is a highly wearable everyday sneaker with stylish retro charm.
