GEL-Quantum 90

The Gel-Quantum series was first introduced by ASICS in 2015, and in just a few short years, it had expanded to include several different models. The debut design featured visible Gel cushioning all the way around the midsole, but in 2018, the brand released a variation called the Gel-Quantum 90, which, as its name suggests, had 90 degrees of visible Gel, offering an alternative yet equally captivating look.

The original ASICS Gel-Quantum 90 is minimal in design, exhibiting a sleek, low-profile build that is great for casual running and all-day comfort. Its upper is made from breathable heather mesh, with a secure lacing system, intricate stitching on the heel and no-sew ASICS stripes on the sidewalls, but otherwise, it is free from decorative effects. Its successor brought in a sturdier heel counter and altered lacing, producing greater stability and lockdown, with an even more stripped-back esthetic created by placing the sidewall logos behind the mesh layer.

In 2021, the Gel-Quantum 90 III gave the stripes a more prominent position, adding geometric no-sew overlays alongside a more extensive heel panel, a protective toe overlay and pull tabs on the tongue and heel. Its 2023 successor then switched to a suave upper somewhere between the two previous editions. On top of this, a structured heel counter supports the back of the foot and a pull tab rises above it, while a textile band on the tongue helps keep the laces in place. Just a few no-sew overlays adorn the sides and a set of capitalized Gel text accents the heel for a smooth street style esthetic.

Meanwhile, the reliable sole unit of the ASICS Gel-Quantum 90 has undergone its own evolution over the years. The midsole of the original model is made from lightweight SpEVA foam, with blocks of visible Gel cushioning around the lateral heel creating a dynamic look while also providing good responsiveness and shock absorption. Supporting this comfort-giving midsole is a durable rubber outsole with rows of solid grip pads for high levels of traction. This formula remained largely the same throughout the next two versions, but in 2023, the Gel-Quantum 90 IV took a new approach, introducing Amplifoam cushioning along the full-length of the sole to enhance flexibility and durability. In addition, it has updated Scutoid Gel technology in the heel, whose structure is designed to offer even better impact protection and comfort than previous iterations.

Through the use of premium materials and 90 degrees of glossy Gel cushioning, the ASICS Gel-Quantum 90 combines the performance technologies of a top-quality running shoe with the classy sporting look of an athleisure sneaker. While this means that it can be worn by runners with a neutral step, its lightweight, comfort-focused construction and stylish design make it ideal for casual all-day use.
