Air Max Plus Utility
In 1998, footwear designer Sean McDowell did something completely original with the Nike Air Max, and in the process launched a new series of sneakers based around comfortable Tuned Air cushioning. Of the many variations that have been created over the years, one of the most rugged is the Nike Air Max Plus Utility.
First released in 2023, this distinctive version of the classic Air Max Plus contains durable features that offer a strong, supportive feel. Many of these are common to the Plus line, including the sturdy rubber outsole, the visible Air Max cushioning in the forefoot and heel, and the distinctive whale-fin shank below the midfoot. However, some are unique to the Utility model, in particular the hardy suede mudguard that wraps around almost the entire foot, and the suede panel tapering up the heel.
Perhaps the most distinctive element of the Air Max Plus Utility is the extra set of laces that criss-cross over the top of the traditional ones. Held in place by loops attached to the mudguard on each flank, these two-tone laces are flecked with reflective speckles that bring an intriguing look to the design, along with their practical function. Some colorways also have additional reflective details such as the sidewall swooshes and the more traditional banding over the top of the foot. Rather than being tied like standard laces, the second set is secured via a toggle fastening system.
Meanwhile, the upper is made from a breathable knit mesh for added comfort and a lightweight feel. This also alters the appearance of the shoe, as does the design of the famous wavy overlays stretching across its exterior. Instead of TPU, this palm-tree-like paneling is made from a thin synthetic material for a softer esthetic that is equally compelling as the 1998 original.
Subtle in its style and solid in its construction, the Nike Air Max Plus Utility is the ideal blend of comfort, durability and looks, with a practical build that can support daily wear on the city streets.
