Nike’s flagship training shoe, the Metcon, was initially developed in 2015. At the time, CrossFit was a fast-growing fitness movement, so the brand used its decades of experience to design a multipurpose trainer that could support those enjoying the sport. In 2023, the line reached new levels of stability and support with its 9th iteration.

The component that sets the Nike Metcon 9 apart is the powerful HyperLift plate in its heel. Larger than those on previous versions, this structural piece of TPU delivers incredible stability, allowing the wearer to plant the foot firmly during lifting exercises. This feature is enhanced by the hard, durable rubber of the outsole, whose herringbone grip patterns offer unrivaled traction on a range of surfaces.

Atop this grippy outsole is a dual-density foam midsole that perfectly fits the shoe’s versatile design. Its outer part is made from a firm material that helps to support and stabilize the foot, while its inner section is filled with much softer foam for great cushioning.

The upper of the Metcon 9 is made from a strong mesh which allows breathability without reducing durability. Protective overlays with a textured design radiate across the toe box, while ample padding over the tongue and around the heel give a plush, comfortable fit. The laces are conveniently held in place by a Velcro-fastened lace lock to prevent the shoe from coming undone during exercise.

Another major update on the Nike Metcon 9 is the rubber wrap, which is made specifically for rope climbing. This feature has appeared on previous models, but on the 9th edition, the grippy paneling is much more extensive, covering half of the lateral flank and reaching all the way from the outsole to the collar of the medial one. Here, it curves in towards the arch of the foot, presenting a more appropriate shape where the shoe clings onto the rope.

Although the Metcon 9 is primarily made for functional fitness and cross-training, it also looks great. Since 2023, Nike has produced a collection of colorways with both neutral options and those decorated in vibrant tones. Its branding is also elegantly minimal, ensuring that each workout can be completed in style.
