Nike launched its Project Breaking2 endeavor in 2014 with the aim of boosting athletic performance to the point that a runner could break the 2-hour marathon barrier for the very first time. A side effect of this project was the development of a new generation of groundbreaking running shoes that, in 2023, brought about a lightweight, energy-returning silhouette called the Vaporfly 3.

Like other members of the Vaporfly series, it relies on two key innovations to make it comfortable, responsive and energy-returning. One is the spongy ZoomX foam midsole, the other is the full-length carbon fiber Flyplate. While the latter component features the same spoon-like shape as its predecessors, the former has been reshaped, particularly through the midfoot and into the heel, with a convex design that provides greater stability and a better transition through the foot.

A new rubber formulation has been used to make the outsole, allowing room for more ZoomX foam and thus improving the overall comfort and energy return the shoe can produce. Its perforated waffle grip pods help keep the weight of the Vaporfly 3 very low while still offering excellent traction and durability underfoot. Meanwhile, the mesh upper is formed of the latest Flyknit yarn for a snug fit around the foot and exceptional breathability.

The high-performance design of the Nike Vaporfly 3 was informed by research conducted on and with athletes from the elite to the amateur level. This meticulous development process was highlighted on the original release colorway in March 2023 via a series of honorary details that give it a unique look. The result is a fast, springy, lightweight racing shoe that responds better the more it is pushed, making it ideal for anyone wanting to improve their long-distance running times in style.
