Air Terra Humara
When novice shoe designer Peter Fogg joined Nike in the mid-90s, the brand was attempting to make a high-quality functional trail running shoe. Before long, Fogg was assigned to this bold project, and in 1997, he produced two excellent trail runners: the Air Humara and its follow-up, the Nike Air Terra Humara.
Rugged and strong, the Air Terra Humara is built upon a sturdy rubber outsole with thickset lugs for hard-wearing traction on a variety of outdoor terrain. On top of this, a chunky foam midsole with a visible Air Max unit in the heel provides plush cushioning underfoot. The layered upper is made from a hardy blend of nonabsorbent materials such as leather, suede and textiles, with curvaceous paneling forming organic shapes across its surface and reflective cutouts illuminating the toe, midfoot and heel.
Visually, the central part of the Terra Humara is based on a motorbike wheel, giving it a unique appearance. Its reliable lacing system resembles the spokes, with overlays that wrap around each flank to connect to a brake-disc structure at the midsole. A series of small portholes in both sides of the heel show off the bouncy airbag inside, each one set back a little to shield it from damage by sticks and stones.
For branding, swooshes are positioned at the rear of each flank, while Nike Trail logos decorate the outsole, insole and tongue. Nike and Air text has been scattered across the design, from the debossed wording on the midsole and collar to the embroidered logo and lettering on the heel.
When it was first released, the Nike Air Terra Humara was a popular model beloved by outdoor trail runners and global celebrities alike. Over two decades later, it returned to the limelight in a stylish collaboration with Undefeated that ran from 2023 to 2024, thus proving the timeless appeal of this adventurous sneaker.
