Nike has always aimed to create the very best athletic footwear, both for professionals and those who enjoy an active daily lifestyle. In 2023, this led to the release of the Motiva – an innovative silhouette designed to enhance female fitness routines by supporting a balance of walking, jogging and running.

The upper of the Nike Motiva is made of a lightweight knitted mesh that provides a secure, comfortable fit. Its softly padded waterfall heel reduces pressure on the Achilles and ankles, while its integrated tongue creates a sock-like feel and facilitates easy on and off, especially when combined with the tongue pull tab. The Motiva is built around a new last which has been deliberately widened through the front and arch to be comfortably roomy. It also combines delicate no-sew overlays and a small heel counter with secure lacing, reinforced eyelets and a series of broad textile lace loops down the center of the tongue for great lockdown.

The Motiva has a large sole unit which elevates the wearer and enhances comfort via a generous stack of Cushlon 3.0 foam that extends from heel to toe in a bold rocker shape with striking curves at either end. This allows the foot to transition effortlessly from heel to toe, making walking, jogging and light running easy, propulsive and highly enjoyable. Its unique rubber outsole features Waffle lugs across the forefoot and heel, with wavy grip lines of differing thicknesses rippling across the space between. Although these irregular tread patterns seem random, they have been carefully designed to produce top-quality traction. Meanwhile, their ComfortGroove undulations compress strategically as the foot presses down, absorbing impacts and adding energy return for a feeling of softness and bounce that ultimately reduces leg fatigue. Lastly, the outsole presents a wide platform for the foot, giving decent lateral stability and encouraging energetic forward motion.

Esthetically, the Nike Motiva exudes an understated yet eye-catching style thanks to its minimalist upper and epic sole. The former features elegant branding, from the integrated sidewall Swooshes, which are echoed on either side of the rear midsole, to the parallel lines of interlocking mini-logos on the central lace loops and the Nike lettering on the heel and tongue. The Motiva’s striking profile is captivatingly eccentric as its curved toe and heel are complemented by its wavy outsole, whose Waffle grip pads provide an appealing touch of nostalgia.

The Motiva launched in May 2023 as a women’s exclusive, but men’s editions were soon released, as were practical variants like the GORE-TEX, with its waterproof upper, reflective details and wet-traction outsole, and the SP, whose chunky upper and toggle lacing provide comfort and security alongside a compelling new style.
